Raw material control
Raw Material Control
Our Commitment
At Wuhan Greenfood Biological Engineering Co., Ltd., raw material control is not a single checkpoint—it is the foundation of every natural colour we manufacture. For over two decades, we have specialised in the extraction of plant-based colourants, and we have learned that the consistency, safety, and performance of a finished pigment begin long before it reaches our extraction lines. Our raw material control philosophy is therefore built on a simple principle: know the source, verify every batch, and document everything.
Source Selection and Supplier Qualification
We source plant materials—including gardenia fruit, safflower, red radish, red beet, and red cabbage—from established growers and suppliers who meet our documented qualification criteria. Raw materials are strictly selected on a Non-GMO basis. Each supplier is evaluated not only on commercial terms but on their ability to provide consistent botanical identity, traceable harvest records, and compliance with applicable pesticide and contaminant limits. Suppliers are reviewed periodically, and approval is conditional on continued performance against our specifications.
Incoming Inspection and Identity Verification
Every incoming lot is subject to quarantine and inspection before release to production. Our incoming control protocol includes:
Botanical identity confirmation to prevent substitution or adulteration;
Physicochemical screening (moisture, ash, colour value, and relevant marker compounds);
Contaminant monitoring, including heavy metals such as lead and arsenic, and where applicable, pesticide residues and solvent residues;
Microbiological testing to verify compliance with food-grade hygiene requirements.
These checks are calibrated to the specific raw material and its intended colourant output, so that the control intensity reflects the actual risk profile of each botanical source.
Full-Chain Traceability
Each raw material lot is assigned a unique internal identifier that links it to its supplier, harvest or production period, receiving date, inspection records, and the batches of finished colourant into which it is incorporated. This traceability is maintained from receipt through processing to final release, enabling rapid identification and response should any quality or safety question arise. The system is designed to support both internal quality investigations and regulatory or customer audits.
Compliance with Chinese and International Standards
Our raw material control programme operates within the framework of China's GB 2760 and the corresponding GB 1886 series of national food safety standards for individual colourants, which define permitted sources, purity criteria, and contaminant limits for food additives. Where our products are intended for export or for customers serving international markets, raw material acceptance criteria are additionally aligned with relevant overseas requirements—including EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012, which set purity specifications such as lead limits, solvent residue ceilings, and microbiological criteria for colours used in the European Union. Our quality system is certified to FSSC 22000, and we maintain Halal and Kosher certifications, each of which imposes its own raw-material traceability and integrity requirements that our control programme is designed to satisfy.
Continuous Improvement
Raw material control is a living system. Supplier performance data, inspection trends, regulatory updates, and customer feedback are reviewed at defined intervals to refine specifications and tighten where needed. Our technical team works with academic and research partners to improve analytical methods and to anticipate emerging risks in botanical supply chains. The objective is not merely compliance at the point of receipt, but a raw material stream that consistently delivers the colour strength, stability, and safety profile our customers depend on.
